Welcome to a return to your senses!

We are beyond thrilled to announce that we will be BACK IN THE SUZANNE ROBERTS THEATRE this November, and we invite you all to join us – safely – for art that will heal your theatre-starved souls.

The season ahead is one of firsts – TWO world premieres! – and offers you three rich sensory experiences.  The Garbologists, by Lindsay Joelle, is a slyly off-beat buddy comedy, Choir Boy, by Academy Award-winner Tarell Alvin McCraney, literally sings with newly arranged gospel and R&B music, and Where We Belong, Madeline Sayet’s poetic and deep solo journey in our globalized but fractured world, takes us through a tactile, sound- and light-filled personal exploration of her people’s cultural history.

Our season opener, the world-premiere comedy The Garbologists by Lindsay Joelle, follows two city sanitation workers who discover there’s more that binds them than taking out the trash. He’s a white, blue-collar mansplainer hiding a heart of gold. She’s the Black, Ivy League-educated newbie who just joined his route. Thrown together in a 19-ton garbage truck, their pre-coffee bickering gives way to a reluctant bond over the broken, beautiful things we discard.  Runs from NOV 11 – DEC 5, 2021.

Choir Boy, from Tarell Alvin McCraney, the Academy Award®-winning writer of MOONLIGHT.  is a piercing play about a young man finding his voice. Taking his place out front as the choir leader at an elite all-boys, all-Black prep school, Pharus Young is determined to make his mark by challenging expectations in a world steeped in deep-rooted traditions. Can he find harmony among his peers while staying true to his own voice? The play won two Tony Awards on Broadway and will be directed by PTC Resident Artist Jeffrey Page. Runs from FEB 18 – MAR 13, 2022.

Our final play is also a world premiere. Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, in association with The Folger Shakespeare Library, presents Where We Belong, by Madeline Sayet. In 2015, Sayet traveled to England to pursue a PhD in Shakespeare, finding a country that refuses to acknowledge its ongoing role in colonialism, just as the Brexit vote threatens to further disengage the UK from the wider world. In this intimate and exhilarating solo piece, Madeline journeys across geographic borders, personal history, and cultural legacies in search of a place to belong.  Runs from APR 15 – MAY 8, 2022.

We are committed to providing and maintaining a gathering place that is welcoming and safe to everyone. Please refer to philatheatreco.org/covid for up-to-date covid policies.

We are ready to come back.  Tell us how we can make sure you are ready, too.
