Dear All,

Even though we have been eagerly looking forward to Play Brawl: Round Three, given the recent developments around the coronavirus outbreak, we have no choice but to postpone our annual fundraiser, planned for this Friday, March 13th.

As you can imagine, this is a disappointing blow for us here at Philadelphia Theatre Company, especially for the staff, artists, Contenders, and partners who have put months of hard work and energy into creating an unforgettable evening. Nevertheless, health and safety is of paramount importance, and we have to roll with the punches (see, not even a novel coronavirus can stop us from making puns).

In all seriousness, our work is as much about making great theatre as it is about building community. We have an ethical responsibility to you and everyone in Philadelphia to put the well-being of our community first.

You may not know, but Play Brawl accounts for a tenth of our annual operating budget. It’s critical to our ability to make theatre that is as challenging as it is entertaining. Moreover, a full 20% of the money raised through Play Brawl comes in on the night of the event itself as part of the live auction and audience bidding to support Contenders. It’s no exaggeration to call it our biggest night of the year, so making this decision was not easy, and we are going to need you more than ever when Play Brawl finally makes it to the stage in a few months’ time.

These last few years have seen a huge turnaround in the fortunes of Philadelphia Theatre Company, and we have plans for our 46th Season that promise to surprise, delight, and raise the bar. As we navigate unfamiliar waters and work to reschedule the event, we appreciate your support. If you want to make a tax-deductible donation and help us turn this disappointment into a victory, we won’t say no—nothing dispels the loneliness of social distancing like giving generously to your favorite theatre company!

Your generosity is crucial to our continued survival and success. We say it often, but it’s true that we couldn’t do the work we do without you, and that has never been truer than in this unprecedented moment in the history of our country and our Company.

Thank you for believing in us—watch your inbox for updates and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Suzanne Roberts Theatre during the run of The Wolves from April 10 – May 3.

Until then, be well.
Paige and Emily
