New Plays

The Terrence McNally New Play Award

This prize has been created by Philadelphia Theatre Company (PTC) which has enjoyed a long and fruitful collaboration with Terrence McNally. The award is given annually to recognize a new play or musical that celebrates the transformative power of art — pieces that call to mind the themes and resonance of McNally’s Master Class, Golden Age (both PTC premieres) as well as The Lisbon Traviata.  We believe that the inherent humanity found in McNally’s work, along with his belief in the indelible impact that art and beauty can make on our individual and universal soul should be recognized and celebrated.

The Award consists of a $10,000 cash prize for the creator as well as a year of development support at PTC.  Development will include readings and/or a workshop as well as administrative support and networking to help manage the future of the play or musical beyond its time at PTC. The announcement of the award will be made and celebrated during the company’s PTC@PLAY Festival, which, will run February 18 – March 3, 2013. Last year’s award recipient was playwright Bill Cain, who will present the latest efforts of his work-in-development at the 2013 PTC@Play Festival.

The Selection Process

The selection process this year entails a nomination by invitation only. Each submission will be considered through an invited  institution, organization, or agency  by the Artistic staff in order to be nominated for the Award.

Submissions

Submission Policy

The PTC submission process goes green!

In an attempt to be more earth-friendly, our Literary Office will only accept script submissions electronically via e-mail. Please do NOT send hard copies or an SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope). All acknowledgements and responses will be sent through the Literary e-mail address. Thank you very much for going the paper-less route with us!

Also, please remember, due to the increasingly high number of scripts received and the limitations of staffing, we are unable to accept unsolicited scripts or inquiries. Please submit scripts via agents only. Regrettably, we also cannot accept letters of inquiry, summaries, or page excerpts.

In support of regional playwrights, Philadelphia Theatre Company does accept scripts from Philadelphia and Delaware Valley playwrights directly. Please e-mail your submission to the above address. We receive hundreds of scripts each year so your patience in receiving a response is greatly appreciated. Average response time is six months to one year.
